Objectives

This poster project revolves around the application of the typeface, Electra. To start, research on the typeface and its inventor was completed to understand its background, how it came to exist and where it is applied today. From this research, a poster design was created to portray the features that Electra obtains. Characteristics such as stroke thickness, x-height and size all effect the presentation of Electra. Throughout the poster, shapes are composed using large-scaled type. Every uppercase letter, lowercase letter and number is portrayed on the poster in a way that correctly aligns with the shapes created throughout the design.

The Process

Research

A sheet was composed to highlight characteristics and special features of the typeface. A body of text lends a short description of the appearance, use and background of Electra. All forms of letters, numbers and special characters are placed to the right and presented as a representation in the Electra typeface. The bottom line highlights notable parts such as the shoulder, ear, or serif in a certain letter.

First Draft

Second Draft

From the first to the second draft, I furthered the application of shapes through typography. I reduced the amount of negative space and experimented with color. The paths of smaller text are influenced by the large-scaled typography and shapes.
